A pale top leaf and a burned lower fan leaf can both show up in the same tent. That does not mean the plant needs every bottle on the shelf. This cannabis nutrient deficiency identification guide starts where real diagnosis starts: leaf position, symptom pattern, root-zone pH, and EC.
A nutrient problem is often a feeding problem, but not always. Roots that are too wet, a pH that has drifted, high EC in the medium, poor irrigation timing, and low room temperature can all block uptake. Adding more nutrient before checking those basics can turn a small deficiency into a lockout.
Start With the Root Zone, Not the Bottle
Before correcting a suspected deficiency, check the feed and runoff. In coco and hydro, measure the solution going in and the runoff coming out. In soil, test the water going in and assess moisture level, pot weight, and any runoff you can collect without flooding the container.
For most cannabis in coco or hydro, keep pH in the 5.7 to 6.2 range. Soil usually runs best around 6.2 to 6.7. These are working ranges, not magic points. The goal is to avoid sitting at one extreme long enough to block specific elements.
Then look at EC. If runoff EC is much higher than input EC, the medium is carrying excess salts. That can look like magnesium, calcium, or iron deficiency because roots are struggling to take up what is already present. Correct the irrigation practice first. Feed at an appropriate EC for the plant stage, get enough runoff in coco, and do not let a small container swing from bone dry to saturated.
Use a base nutrient that matches the medium before chasing single elements. Read the Leaf Position First
Mobile nutrients move from older leaves to new growth when the plant is short on supply. Nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, and magnesium symptoms usually start low on the plant. Immobile or less-mobile elements show first in the newest growth. Calcium, iron, boron, and several micronutrients belong in that second group.
That one distinction saves a lot of wrong corrections. Yellow lower leaves do not point to iron. Pale, sharply yellow new growth does not point to nitrogen.
Nitrogen Deficiency: Even Yellowing From the Bottom
Nitrogen deficiency starts as a uniform fade on older fan leaves. The whole leaf goes lighter green, then yellow. It is not usually a crisp edge burn or a pattern between veins. Growth can slow if the shortage continues.
Check whether the plant has been underfed overall, especially after a heavy stretch of vegetative growth or early flower. If your EC and pH are in range, increase the complete base feed carefully rather than reaching first for a single additive. Do not mistake normal late-flower fade for a deficiency that needs a hard correction. It depends on cultivar, plant age, and how far into flower the plant is. A plant that is ripening with healthy upper growth is different from one losing green leaves rapidly in the middle of the cycle.
Magnesium Deficiency: Yellow Between Veins on Older Leaves
Magnesium deficiency usually shows as interveinal chlorosis on older leaves. Veins remain greener while the tissue between them turns pale. With time, small rust-colored spots can form and damaged leaves may curl upward at the edges.
Bionova MgO 10 is the direct correction when magnesium is actually low and the root zone is in range. Add it to a properly mixed base feed, not to plain water as a random rescue. Magnesium is often blamed when the real issue is high EC, a dry coco pot, or pH held too low or too high for uptake.
Calcium and magnesium also need balance. Do not stack calcium products and magnesium products without a reason. If you are using soft or reverse-osmosis water, your base program and water source deserve a closer look before you decide which one to add.
Potassium Deficiency: Burned Margins on Older Leaves
Potassium deficiency often starts at the edges of older leaves. Margins turn yellow, then brown and dry. The leaf may curl, and the damage can move inward as the issue progresses. It is easy to confuse with nutrient burn, so look at the pattern.
Nutrient burn often begins as browned tips across many leaves, especially where EC is too high. Potassium deficiency is more likely to show a broader margin pattern while the leaf interior remains greener at first. Check runoff EC before adding anything.
If pH and EC are right and the symptoms match, Bionova K 20 is the targeted potassium additive. Use it with the appropriate Bionova base nutrient. Do not respond by raising every part of the feed. Potassium has relationships with calcium and magnesium, and pushing it too hard can create a second problem.
New Growth Problems Need a Different Read
When the newest leaves are affected first, focus on calcium, iron, sulfur, boron, and trace elements. Look closely at the growing tip. Is it pale but normally shaped? Twisted and distorted? Showing brown spots? Those details matter.
Calcium Deficiency: Damaged New Growth and Rust Spots
Calcium deficiency usually appears in fresh growth. New leaves may twist, crinkle, or emerge with irregular margins. Small necrotic spots can appear, often before the leaf has fully expanded. Fast-growing plants under strong light can show calcium demand quickly, especially in coco and hydro.
Bionova Ca 15 is the correction for a confirmed calcium shortage. It is useful when source water is very soft, reverse osmosis is used, or plant demand has outpaced the current program. Mix it into the nutrient solution with the base feed according to the label, and never combine concentrates together before diluting in water.
Calcium symptoms can also be a transpiration issue. A root zone that stays too wet, weak air movement, cold roots, or excessively dry air can all limit calcium movement. If the room environment is off, more calcium in the reservoir may not fix the new growth.
Iron Deficiency: Bright Yellow New Leaves With Green Veins
Iron deficiency is one of the cleaner visual calls. The newest leaves turn bright yellow while the veins remain distinctly green. Older leaves often stay relatively normal at first. It commonly comes from high root-zone pH, particularly in hydro or coco, rather than a complete lack of iron in the feed.
Correct pH first. If pH has been controlled and new growth still shows classic iron chlorosis, Bionova Fe 6 is the direct product for iron. Use a measured correction and watch the new leaves. Old yellow tissue rarely turns green again. Healthy color in growth that emerges after the correction is the better signal.
Micronutrient Issues: Do Not Guess From One Spot
Manganese, zinc, boron, and copper deficiencies can overlap visually. You may see pale new growth, irregular chlorosis, weak tips, distorted leaves, or small necrotic marks. A single damaged leaf is not enough to diagnose a trace-element shortage.
First confirm that the plant is receiving Bionova Soil Supermix, Coco Forte, or Hydro Supermix at an appropriate rate. If the base feed has been cut too far back, restore it before adding a single trace mineral. Phosphorus Deficiency Is Less Common Than Growers Think
True phosphorus deficiency can bring dark, dull foliage, slow growth, and sometimes reddish or purplish coloration on petioles or leaves. But purple stems alone are not a diagnosis. Genetics, cool root temperatures, intense light, and normal cultivar color can all produce purple tissue.
Cold roots are a common reason phosphorus uptake drops. If the root zone is cold, solve that condition before adding more feed. If pH, temperature, and EC are correct and the plant shows a consistent phosphorus shortage, Bionova P 20 is the single-mineral correction. Use it deliberately. Excess phosphorus can interfere with micronutrient uptake, particularly zinc and iron.
Make One Change and Watch New Growth
The fastest way to lose the diagnosis is to change pH, increase base feed, add calcium, magnesium, potassium, and a booster all at once. You will not know what worked, and you may push EC past what the roots can handle.
Make the root-zone correction first. Then use the Bionova product that matches the confirmed symptom. Keep records of input pH, input EC, runoff EC, room temperature, and what was added. A plant tells the truth through the next set of leaves, not through damage that is already on the plant.
If the symptom does not match cleanly, hold off on the additive. Get the base feed, pH, and irrigation right, then reassess after fresh growth has had time to respond. That is usually the cheaper correction and the one that keeps the rest of the crop on track.
