A plant can look great on Monday and show pale tops, curled edges, and stalled new growth by Friday after a light change. So, can LED lights burn plants? Yes. A strong LED can push more light onto the canopy than the plant can use, especially when a new fixture is hung too close or turned up too fast. The result is usually light stress or bleaching, not a literal heat burn.
LEDs run cooler than older fixtures at the leaf surface, but the light itself is still intense. Treat a new light like a major environmental change. Measure it, dim it, and let the plant adjust before you start changing nutrients.
Can LED lights burn plants without feeling hot?
They can. A leaf does not need to feel hot to receive too much light. High light intensity can overwhelm chlorophyll in the upper canopy. The newest growth closest to the fixture may fade toward lime green, yellow, or nearly white. Leaf edges may turn upward, often called tacoing or canoeing. Growth slows even though the root zone, feed, and room temperature seem normal.
Heat can make it worse. A light hung close to the canopy may create a warm pocket around the top leaves, even if the room thermometer looks fine. Check temperature where the top leaves sit, not only at the wall. Poor airflow compounds the issue because the plant cannot cool itself through transpiration.
Nutrient burn looks different. It usually starts with browned tips, darker foliage, and a clawed look across more than just the topmost leaves. Light stress is more location-specific. The damage is strongest directly below the fixture and on the highest leaves. That pattern tells you where to start.
A calcium or magnesium shortage can also show at the top of the plant, which is why growers sometimes reach for additives first. Do not do that until you check the light. Adding more feed to a plant that is already stressed by excess light can raise root-zone EC and create a second problem.
Start with light level, not hanging height
Fixture height is only a starting point. Two LEDs hung 24 inches above the canopy can deliver very different intensity. The number that matters is PPFD at leaf level, measured in micromoles per square meter per second. Use a PAR meter if you have one. A quality phone-based meter can be useful for relative readings, but it is not a replacement for a dedicated meter.
For seedlings and fresh cuttings, keep the canopy around 150 to 250 PPFD. Established vegetative plants commonly run well around 300 to 500 PPFD. Fruiting plants and flowering cannabis can use more, but the right ceiling depends on cultivar, room temperature, humidity, irrigation frequency, and whether the room uses supplemental CO2.
Without supplemental CO2, many growers have fewer problems when they increase intensity gradually instead of chasing the highest possible reading. If you are moving from 500 PPFD to 800 PPFD, do not make the jump in one day. Raise the fixture, use the dimmer, or shorten the photoperiod first. Then watch new growth for several days.
The same rule applies after transplanting, defoliation, a nutrient correction, or a power outage. The plant may have tolerated a high setting before, but it is not always ready for that setting during recovery. The light has not changed. The plant’s capacity to use it has.
Set your LED before you change the feed
When top leaves bleach or curl, first raise the fixture or lower the dimmer. Make one meaningful adjustment. A 20 to 30 percent reduction in intensity is often easier to evaluate than moving a light one inch and guessing. Keep the photoperiod steady while you test the new setting.
Next, check canopy temperature and air movement. Place a small circulating fan so leaves move lightly, not violently. Check that the fixture driver is not adding unnecessary heat to the tent. If the driver is removable, moving it outside the tent may help manage ambient temperature, but only if the fixture is designed for that setup.
Then inspect watering. Bright LEDs increase water demand. A plant in coco that was happy with one irrigation event may dry back harder under more light. A soil plant may also drink faster, but that does not mean it needs stronger nutrient water. Match irrigation frequency to the medium and pot weight first.
Damaged leaves will not turn green again. What you are looking for is healthy new growth after the adjustment. If the new leaves come in green and flat, the setting is closer to where it needs to be.
Feed the medium your plant is actually in
Once light intensity is under control, keep the base nutrition simple and matched to the root zone. This is where Bionova makes sense because the base feed is built around the medium rather than forcing one bottle across every setup.
For soil and container mixes, use Bionova Soil Supermix as the base feed. It gives the plant a consistent foundation without turning a light-stress correction into a full feeding overhaul. Mix to the label direction for the plant stage and avoid increasing concentration just because upper leaves are pale. Bleached tops cannot use extra nutrition to repair light damage.
For coco, use Bionova Coco Forte A+B. Coco holds onto cations differently than soil, and a proper coco base feed keeps the root zone more predictable when the plants are drinking hard under LEDs. Check runoff or media EC if you have the tools. If EC is climbing while the tips brown, the answer may be less accumulation and better irrigation management, not more light or more additives.
For recirculating or drain-to-waste hydroponics, use Bionova Hydro Supermix. Keep the reservoir stable, monitor EC and pH daily, and make light changes separately from feed changes. When you change both at once, you cannot tell which variable fixed the problem or caused the next one.
For most hydro and coco crops, pH around 5.7 to 6.1 is a workable target range. Soil generally runs higher, commonly around 6.2 to 6.8 depending on the mix and water source. The exact number is less useful than consistency. Big swings in pH can mimic deficiency symptoms just as easily as a too-close LED.
Use mineral additives to correct a measured need
Bionova’s single-mineral products are useful after the environment and base feed are in line. They are not a substitute for moving an overpowered fixture.
If you have confirmed a calcium need through water quality, feed records, or a known soft-water setup, Bionova Ca 15 is the direct correction. Use it when calcium is the issue, not as an automatic response to every pale top. If magnesium is the identified gap, use Bionova MgO 10. Correct one mineral at a time when possible. That keeps the root zone readable.
Bionova Silution can be used as part of a normal program when you want supplemental silicon in the feed. It does not make a plant immune to excessive PPFD. Stronger tissue still needs a reasonable light level, proper watering, and enough time to acclimate.
Root health matters during recovery too. Bionova BN Roots is best used around transplant, early rooting, or when establishing plants before you push intensity. A well-established root zone gives you more room to run a productive canopy, but it does not erase the limits of the cultivar or the environment.
Be careful with stimulators when a plant is visibly stressed. Bionova X-cel has a place in a normal growth program, but first get the fixture, temperature, and irrigation right. A stressed plant needs fewer moving parts, not a shelf full of new inputs.
A safe way to increase LED power
When the plant is healthy, increase light in steps. Raise PPFD or dimmer output, then give the canopy time to respond. Watch the newest leaves directly under the fixture, compare them with leaves at the edge of the footprint, and check how quickly pots or slabs are drying.
If the center tops lighten while the outer plants remain dark green, your footprint may be uneven or the fixture is too close. Raising the light can improve spread while lowering the peak intensity. That trade-off is usually worth it in a mixed canopy. A slightly lower peak reading across an even canopy is easier to manage than one hot center with weak edges.
Do not use leaf color alone to decide that plants need more light. Healthy green growth, reasonable internode spacing, normal leaf posture, and stable water use tell a fuller story. The brightest setting on the driver is not a target. It is simply the fixture’s maximum output.
If your plants are showing pale tops after an LED upgrade, back the light down first, stabilize the root zone with the correct Bionova base feed, and only then correct a verified mineral issue. That order saves time and avoids chasing one symptom with three bottles.
