A recirculating system returns runoff to a reservoir. Its EC, pH, temperature, water level, and cleanliness all affect every plant connected to it.

Drain to waste sends a fresh nutrient solution to the container, slab, or bag, then allows the excess to leave the root zone. You do not return that runoff to the feed tank.
