A seedling can look small above the medium while building the root system that determines how well it handles transplanting, training, and later feeding. The question, when should seedlings start fertilizer, is less about a calendar date than the plant’s stage, its growing medium, and what was already supplied in the root zone.

For most seedlings, the right time is when the first set of true leaves is established and a second set is beginning to develop.
